High quality foams will ensure you have effective mechanical filtration. It is very important to remove all suspended particles prior to the water coming in contact with the filter media - that allows the media to operate at maximum efficiency. The coarse and medium grades of foams can be cleaned in water you have drained from your tank during maintenance and the fine white 'polishing' pad will need replacing when it is clogged.
Water must hit foams in this order: Coarse, Medium then Fine (polishing pad). That makes sure you have all the mechanical filtration done before water enters the biological zone (where your media is).
If you have the 'polishing pad' after your media it will concentrate fine particles in the media area which will clog it and drastically reduce the efficiency of your filter.
Always polish water BEFORE it comes into contact with media - that is very important.
