Biohome 'Standard' is most suitable for internal, small external, hang-on-back (HOB) and overhead aquarium filters. It may be broken up into smaller pieces to fit into smaller filter chambers but for very small situations Biogravel may be more suitable.
Biohome Standard filter media was the first in a line of premium quality sintered glass filter media. It has a 20+ year record of trouble free use.
It is made from industrial grade materials to ensure a long working life and with a porosity of approx. 42% it has a great usable surface area for bacterial colonisation.
The colonisation of Biohome Standard by beneficial bacteria is very fast, normally between 14-21 days for aerobic bacteria (for processing ammonia and nitrite) and between 4-6 months for anaerobic bacteria (for processing nitrate).
It recovers fast after the use of medications and can be easily transferred between systems.
Biohome Standard is an efficient biological filter media and as with all porous media good mechanical filtration must be used prior to it for maximum efficiency.
Biohome Standard allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to grow on and through its unique structure.
This media is sold by the kilogram. 1 kilogram of media is approximately equal to approx. 1.0 cubic litre.
For best nitrate reduction use approx. 1kg per 100 litres of aquarium water for a normally stocked tank. Heavily stocked systems can take between 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres to achieve full cycle filtration (reduction in nitrate).
As all Biohome media is inert it allows you to raise or lower the pH to suit certain fish species without having a buffering effect.
Free gel filter starter balls are shipped with every order - simply add them in with the media in your filter and they will slowly dissolve, helping to seed the filter naturally and very effectively with live bacteria.
