Biodegradable polymer gel balls which dissolve slowly, releasing millions of live bacteria into your filter. As the balls dissolve slowly they release a measured dose of bacteria for natural colonisation which is much better than dumping in a load of bacteria in liquid form which creates a 'boom / bust' scenario.
The balls will dissolve faster when ammonia and nitrite are present in the water so they are perfect for adding to a new system when cycling the tank and also when replacing filter media as it will ensure that any rise in ammonia and nitrite is quickly processed before it reaches dangerous levels.
